In July 2025, the total value of building permits in Canada saw a slight decline of 0.1% compared to the previous month, totaling $11.9 billion. This follows a sharper 9% drop in June. The decrease was primarily due to a reduction in non-residential permits, which fell by $279.2 million. However, this was somewhat balanced by gains in the residential sector, which increased by $268.3 million.

Within the non-residential category, there was a notable decline in industrial permits, down by $252.9 million, and institutional permits, which decreased by $196 million. Conversely, commercial permits experienced a rise, increasing by $169.7 million, with Ontario contributing significantly to this growth, adding $82.5 million. The industrial sector's decrease was largely influenced by a $190.9 million reduction in Ontario, while Alberta faced the largest drop in institutional permits, losing $192.1 million.

In the residential sector, single-family permits increased by $143.5 million, reaching $2.6 billion, and multi-unit permits rose by $124.8 million, totaling $4.7 billion. Across Canada, permits were authorized for 20,000 multi-unit and 4,100 single-family dwellings, marking a 1.9% increase from June's figures. This growth was predominantly driven by Ontario's substantial contribution of $497.5 million to the sector's overall increase.
