The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk sea freight index, an important metric that assesses the shipping rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, increased by 0.7% on Friday to reach its peak level since July 28, concluding at 2,126 points. This rise follows a marginal decline of 0.1% in the previous session. Insights into specific vessel categories show the capesize index—which handles approximately 150,000-ton shipments of commodities like iron ore and coal—climbed roughly 1% to 3,070 points. Meanwhile, the panamax index, typically associated with 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, increased by 0.4%, reaching 2,006 points, marking its highest point in over a year. Among the smaller vessels, the supramax index saw a gain of approximately 0.5%, rising to 1,492 points. Over the week, the overall benchmark index achieved a 7.4% increase, representing its most robust weekly performance since July 21.
