In August 2025, electronic card transactions in New Zealand rose by 0.7% month-over-month on a seasonally adjusted basis, totaling NZD 6.94 billion. There were increases in spending within the hospitality sector (+1.4%), durables (+0.5%), consumables (+0.3%), and apparel (+1.8%). Conversely, there was a slight decline in the sectors of fuel (-0.1%) and motor vehicles excluding fuel (-0.9%). On an annual comparison, total electronic card spending saw a growth of 0.9% in August, following a 1.7% rise in July. This pattern demonstrates a steady yet moderate increase in consumer expenditure.
