12.09.202501:29:12UTC+00U.S. Presses G7 to Levy Tariffs on India, China Over Russian Oil

The United States is set to advocate for the G7 nations to implement significant tariffs on India and China in response to their purchase of Russian oil, as part of a strategy to compel Moscow to engage in peace negotiations with Ukraine, according to a report by the Financial Times. G7 finance ministers are scheduled to deliberate on this proposal during a video conference today, coinciding with President Trump's increased efforts to facilitate an agreement. The United States has already escalated tariffs on Indian products to 50% and temporarily increased duties on Chinese imports earlier this year. Although the U.S. has suggested imposing tariffs between 50% and 100%, European Union officials have cautioned that such actions could strain relations with New Delhi and invite countermeasures from Beijing. Instead, Brussels is advocating for other measures, such as setting earlier deadlines to cease Russian energy imports and enforcing stricter sanctions, although reluctance from Hungary and Slovakia poses a challenge.
