In October 2025, the United States witnessed a decline in the number of job resignations, decreasing by 187,000 to a total of 2.941 million, compared to 3.128 million in September and 3.217 million a year earlier. This figure marks the lowest since August 2020, primarily attributed to reductions in resignations within the accommodation and food services sector (-136,000), health care and social assistance (-114,000), and the federal government (-25,000). Notably, federal government resignations in September had previously reached a record high of 46,000. In contrast, the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector saw an increase in resignations by 38,000, along with the information sector experiencing a rise of 21,000. The quits rate, which evaluates voluntary employment departures as a percentage of the total workforce, dipped to 1.8% in October from 2% the prior month. Regionally, the South recorded a significant reduction of 218,000 in job resignations, whereas the Northeast observed an increase of 28,000. This release of data, encompassing September and October figures, occurred simultaneously for the first time due to a protracted 43-day government shutdown spanning from October into November, which delayed the usual publication schedule.
