12.08.202606:40:42UTC+00ASX 200 Finishes in the Red

The ASX 200 dropped 41 points, or 0.45%, to finish at 9,209 on Wednesday, reversing the previous session’s modest gains and closing at its lowest level in a week. The decline was led by steep losses in manufacturing, consumer non-durables, healthcare, and retail trade stocks. Sentiment weakened after the Reserve Bank of Australia left the cash rate unchanged at 4.35% on Tuesday but signaled that further tightening remains possible if inflation proves persistent. Additional pressure came from an overnight pullback on Wall Street, as rising tensions in the Middle East and renewed attacks near key shipping lanes fueled concerns about energy supply disruptions.

Among major stocks, Commonwealth Bank slipped 0.7% despite posting record annual cash earnings, as it warned of a sharp slowdown in mortgage demand following recent tax changes. Rio Tinto edged 0.2% lower even after securing government assistance to help offset surging energy costs. ASX Ltd. slumped 2.8% after a shareholder moved to file a Federal Court application against the exchange operator. In contrast, AGL Energy jumped 6.0%, supported by stronger-than-expected earnings guidance for 2027.
