Canada has announced its decision to eliminate a 25% tariff on approximately half of the U.S. goods it had been targeting since March. This move is intended to reset trade relations with Washington. Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed the removal of duties on products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, beer, appliances, and motorcycles, effective from September 1. However, tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum, and automobiles will remain intact for the present. The announcement came after Prime Minister Carney's initial discussion with President Trump since the collapse of trade negotiations prior to the August 1 deadline. During a press conference, Carney emphasized that lifting these tariffs signifies that "the U.S. and Canada will now treat the majority of their trade on an equal footing," highlighting that Canadian imports remain excluded from U.S. duties under the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). A White House spokesperson hailed the move as "long overdue," while Carney assured that Ottawa's focus will shift to supporting industries still subjected to significant tariffs and preparing for the formal review of the USMCA scheduled for next year.
